Grading

In what can only described as the UTAS flavour, the only place that I could find a description of the grading scheme was on GradeCalc.info, which is a "free unofficial grade calculation tool", as the Examinations & Results page offered little in the way of information.

Update

A page appeared on the UTAS student portal in 2022 explaining what is a GPA and how to calculate it.

Letter Grade Grade Percentage Points
HD/HF High Distinction/Honours First Class 80-100 7
DN/HU Distinction/Honours - second class upper division 70-79 6
CR/HL Credit/Honours - second class lower division 60-69 5
PP/HT Pass/Honours - third class 50-59 4
FP ? ? 3
NN/HN Fail/Honours fail 0-49 0
AN Absent deemed failed N/A 0
WN Withdrawn deemed failed N/A 0

Students with a grade in the band of can be awarded the grade of NS, which grants them a supplementary assessment, which gives them a second chance to demonstrate attainment of an ILO.

  • It is up to the unit coordinators (UC) to contact students, once the results have been released, with the information about the Supp.
  • If the supp is to be internally invigilated, it is entirely up to the UC to negotiate with the student on the scheduling of the task.
  • If the supp is a traditionally invigilated exam run by the exams office, inform the student that their supp will be scheduled for them by the exams office.
  • And, critical step: if the supp is a traditionally invigilated exam to be run by the exams office, they will do the scheduling for you, but UCs need to take the first step of contacting the exams office with a list of students for whom the Supp is required.

Once a supplementary assessment has been completed, one needs to cantact the head of learning and teaching and advise on the grade change:

Student ID surname First name Previously NS47 based on needing to satisfy ILO1. Completed supp assignment satisfactorily for this ILO Becomes PP50

and complete the Change of Assessment form by Unit in the service portal.
