Induction and training¶
To become familiar with the policies, procedures, and in the best case, gain access and learn how to use new tools and techniques, there are a range of induction and training processes. Some of the processes are mandatory, and some are optional, depending on what activities you are required to undertake as part of your position at the university.
A word of warning
In general, training for actually dangerous things is both rigorous and good, but training for everything else is burdensome, tedious, and not particularly informative. In many cases, it is legislated that training must occur, so whilst unfortunate that the communicating actually useful content isn't seen as a priority, from a pragmatic point of view, it is better to set you jaw and blast through the content.
Inductions¶
All staff and students are required to complete two induction when starting at the university: 1. A university-wide safety induction module 2. A local area induction
UTAS induction¶
at the beginning of each year it is a requirement that all members of the university community complete the Safety and Wellbeing Induction module. As stated on the university induction page:
The Online Safety and Wellbeing Induction aims to give you an overview of WHS policy, procedures and practices at the University and an understanding of your safety responsibilities.
The course is accessed through MyLO1. In order to complete the course, you must first enrol in the course and instructions on how to do so can be found here.
Local Area Induction¶
a stated purpose of providing safety information specific to the specific workplace
Local area induction checklist
In principle, you are required to complete the safety and wellbeing induction prior to gaining [[infrastructure:access|access to the building]]; however enforcing this has proved difficult. You should complete your local area WHS induction with you line manager or supervisor during your onboarding procedure.
Safety induction links
The MyLO pages with the safety induction training modules are linked to yearly courses, and thus should not be permalinked. Instead, the below links should be used: * Safety and Wellbeing Induction * Laboratory and Workshop Inductions
Link redirection
The simplest way to have a link redirection is to use the existing L&T server to redirect requests to the relevant MyLO addresses. Hosting is done using apache and thus forwarding can be achieved by altering the appropriate .conf
file, in this case phome-le-ssl.conf
in the /etc/apache2/sites-available
directory to include the lines:
Redirect permanent "/safetyandwellbeing" "https://mylo.utas.edu.au/d2l/home/561362"
Redirect permanent "/labinduction" "https://mylo.utas.edu.au/d2l/home/561970"
Redirect permanent "/essentials" "https://mylo.utas.edu.au/d2l/home/559505"
The new courses are created in January, and thus these links should be updated in the new year. Ensure that the apache service is restarted via
once the changes have been made.
